Concerts For Kids
Don’t miss these interactive and engaging hour-long concerts for families with children ages 5-11! Come early and meet New World Symphony Fellows at the Instrument Petting Zoo, where children are given the opportunity to touch and play various instruments including percussion, piano, strings, wind, and brass instruments.

Education Concerts
(Grades 6-12, free of charge)
“Kids in the Concert Hall”
The NWS Education concerts are designed to be an inspirational, educational experience outside the classroom for grades 6-12. These thematic daytime concerts will introduce major orchestral works and composers to students and teachers from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. A study guide is sent to all participating classes and round-trip bus transportation is provided free of charge. The duration of each concert is one hour.

Education Concert Webcast
Each season, NWS is proud to offer a free, high-quality webcast of our “Kids in the Concert Hall” program which is a recording of the live concerts performed in December 2012 at the New World Center Performance Hall. Additionally, we offer a program Study Guide free of charge to assist you with preparing your students for the presentation. This concert is targeted at students in grades 6 through 12, but may also be viewed by younger students.

In order to view the webcast, you will need:
• A computer (PC or Mac) with Flash Player installed. Please only use one computer to insure quality of stream.
• A large format external display such as a plasma/LCD screen, projector, smart board, etc.
• External speakers

Date: Friday, March 29, 2013. Each session will last 45 minutes and you will be able to register for a specific time.

The broadcast times are: 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm (all EST).

NWS in the Schools (K-Young Adult)

Throughout the season NWS musicians visit area schools to present 45 minute interactive and thematic musical presentations to a wide range of secondary school students. These in-class presentations provide a creative approach toward exciting the imaginations of youth through a variety of musical activities geared toward classroom engagement and discovery of this art form. Students are introduced to focused listening skills, knowledge of cultural history, and a personal connection to the art of music through the New World Symphony fellows.

In-School Coachings
(Grades 4-12)
The NWS Fellows are available to coach sectionals and assist in coaching music groups in your school or youth orchestra. Working with a professional musician can be a transformative experience in the development of young musicians and we offer a range of instrumental coaching possibilities. When submitting your application for a school/youth orchestra coaching session, please specify which instruments are to be coached, age range, level, and ensemble size. All instrumental levels are welcome.

NWS in the Community
(Hospitals, Continuing Education Classes, etc.)
The NWS Fellows are available to offer interactive, musical presentations which cover a range of topics in diverse instrumental groupings. These groupings may consist of string quartets, quintets, brass ensembles, woodwind ensembles, harp, percussion and piano. The transformative power of music is often a balm for those in need, especially in hospital and hospice settings. When submitting your application, please specify which instruments are preferred. We also ask that submissions are communicated to us at least a month in advance of the requested date.

Medellin Musician Exchange
During the 2011-2012 season, the New World Symphony inaugurated a unique collaboration with the Academia Filarmónica de MedellÍn, with the generous support of the Fundación SaludArte. This cross cultural exchange has proven of enormous to value to NWS Fellows who gain a deeper understanding of their role in the 21st century as musical ambassadors, advocates and engaged teachers. NWS Fellows travel to MedellÍn to offer instrumental coaching, private lessons, master classes and side by side performances with the young musicians of AFMED. Several times during the season, AFMED musicians travel to the New World Center in Miami Beach for several days of additional coachings, lessons, chamber music sessions and performances with NWS Fellows. With the support of our Internet2 connectivity, supplemental work with the Medellin musicians continual occurs throughout the season in collaboration with the Universidad EAFIT.

Young Artist Competition
(Grades 9-12)
The New World Symphony is pleased to offer extraordinarily talented, high school musicians an opportunity to perform as soloist with an ensemble comprised of New World Symphony Fellows and select advanced high school musicians.

The Competition is open to advanced string, woodwind, brass, piano and percussion students grades 9 through 12. All competition participants will be considered for the Side by Side Ensemble performance on Saturday, April 13, 2013 (7:30 PM). Competition auditions will take place on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the New World Center and a competition pianist will be provided on the competition day free of charge. If you chose, you may bring your own pianist for the competition. The registration deadline for the Competition is Friday, March 1, 2013.

Young Artist Competition Rules:
• Registration Fee: $10
• Single movements of concerti are allowed, although a solo work of similar stature with orchestration is permitted
• The Competition will be comprised of two rounds: a preliminary round, and a final round (same day)
• Concerto selection to be performed at the concert will not exceed 15 minutes (single movement of a concerto is allowed) and must be the same work performed at the initial competition
• Competitors must provide TWO ORIGINAL copies of their concerti to hand to the adjudicators at the time of the audition
• The Young Artist Competition is open to high school musicians in the state of Florida only.

Side by Side Ensemble
(Grades 7-12)
The New World Symphony is pleased to offer advanced young instrumentalists grades 7 through 12 an opportunity to perform in the Side by Side Ensemble concert, where they will be play alongside New World Symphony fellows, developing a musical working relationship as they prepare and perform orchestral works of the highest caliber.

These auditions are open to advanced string, woodwinds, brass, and percussion students, grades 7 through 12. All instrumentalists selected will be engaged for the Side by Side Ensemble performance on Saturday, April 13, 2013 (7:30 PM).

Individual auditions will take place on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the New World Center and a pianist will be provided on audition day free of charge. If you chose, you may bring your own pianist to the audition. The registration deadline is Friday, March 1, 2013.

Side by Side Audition Rules:
• Registration Fee: $10
• A single solo work must be prepared which represents the applicants level of musicianship and technical ability
• Competitors must provide TWO ORIGINAL copies of their music at the time of the audition
• A pianist will be provided free of charge, however, you may perform with your own pianist if you so chose
• This competition is open to all musicians grade 7 – 12.
• There are no residency requirements.

Young Musicians' Lessons
(Grades 7-12; free of charge)
The New World Symphony Young Musicians’ Lessons is a program that offers dedicated student instrumentalists an opportunity to augment and enhance their instrumental studies through private instrumental lessons with members of the New World Symphony. Participants will receive at least two private lessons each month (the length of time to be determined by the instrumental teacher) and the program is provided free of charge. Consultations will be arranged at the start of the NWS performance season and for those selected to participate a culminating recital will be offered in April 2013. Demand for participation in this program is high and there is limited availability so we ask that those selected adhere strictly to the stated YML guidelines.

Inside the Music
Our Inside the Music programs provide an intimate and interactive view into the world of classical music and symphonic musicians. Throughout the concert season, NWS musicians prepare and host a series of hour long, mini-seminars exploring an array of topics of their choosing such as orchestral music history, professional instrumental auditions, and classical music appreciation, to list a few. Audience members are encouraged to participate by asking questions and taking part in post-performance discussions. The cost is free, however tickets are required! Specific information on topics will be posted as it becomes available.

Rehearsal Observation
(Grades 3 and up, free of charge)
Rehearsal Observations offer the unique opportunity of viewing the inner workings of a symphony orchestra. During the visits, students will witness a working rehearsal with internationally renowned conductors and soloists. The observation requires that groups remain in the performance hall for approximately seventy-five minutes. Prior to the rehearsal, groups will meet with members of the New World Symphony to learn more about works to be rehearsed and answer questions relating to their specific orchestral instrument.

Rehearsal Observations are held on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10:00AM to 11:15 AM

Please note:
• Groups must arrive by 9:30am to be seated.
• Rehearsal Observations are subject to change or cancellation at any time
• Photography is prohibited during the rehearsal
• The observation requires that groups remain in the hall for approximately seventy-five (75) minutes.
• Leaving during the rehearsal is not permitted.
