Education Programs at the New World Center

Education Concerts - Kids in the Concert Hall
(Grades 3-8, free of charge)
A series of daytime educational concerts for young audience members. These thematic concerts are designed to introduce major orchestral works and composers of classical music to students and teachers from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. A study guide is sent to all participating schools, and buses are provided free of charge.

Registration for December 2011 is now closed, please check back in August for information on the 2012 Education Concerts.

Education Concert Webcast
(Grades 3-8, free of charge)
Each season, NWS offers a free, high-quality webcast of our "Kids in the Concert Hall" program, allowing teachers to bring the NWS experience into their classrooms. A study guide will be sent free of charge to all participating schools in preparation for the webcast. In order to view the webcast, you will need: a high speed internet connection, Adobe Flash Player installed, a large-format external display, speakers. For questions regarding technical requirements, please contact the Community Engagement Department at 305.673.3330.

Date: Friday, March 23, 2012. Each viewing lasts 40 minutes.

Daytime NWS Rehearsal Observation
(Grades 3-8, free of charge)
Rehearsal Observations offer students the unique opportunity of watching the New World Symphony in rehearsal. During this visit, students witness a "work in progress" with some of the greatest conductors and soloists in the world. Program notes on the pieces being rehearsed are provided upon request for teachers to prepare students, and there will be a short presentation about the musicians and pieces featured on the concert's program prior to the beginning of rehearsal. Groups of students, university classes, and adult life-long learning classes are welcome.

Dates: Select Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 10:00AM to 11:30PM.

NWS Family Concert Series - Concerts For Kids
Don't miss these interactive and engaging hour-long concerts for families with children ages 5-9. Come early and meet New World Symphony Fellows at our Instrument Petting Zoo, where the only thing running wild is your child's imagination!

Dates: October 2, 2011 and March 25, 2012 at 11:30AM and 2:30PM

Young Artist Concerto/Side-by-Side Competition
(Grades 7-12)
Each year, talented student instrumentalists are invited to perform in the Side-by-Side concert, where they will be paired with a NWS Fellow, developing a working relationship as they prepare and perform orchestral music of the highest caliber. The Concerto Competition winner will be invited to perform his/her concerto with full orchestra at the Side-by-Side concert.

Young Musicians' Lessons
(Grades 7-12, free of charge)
The New World Symphony Young Musicians' Lessons Program is an opportunity for dedicated student instrumentalists with proven financial need to receive free music lessons with NWS Fellows. Students will learn more about orchestral performance and the art of classical music. The program is intended to supplement students' participation in their school programs and offer at least two private lessons each month. No audition is required.

This year's application deadline has passed. Please check back next spring to apply for next year's program!

Inside the Music
Because learning does not stop outside the classroom, NWS provides educational opportunities for adults and senior citizens as well. Throughout the concert season NWS Fellows prepare and host a series of adult music education classes covering topics such as music history and music appreciation, among others. Tickets are free, but required.

NWS in the Schools

Explorations in Music
(Grades K-12, free of charge)
Throughout the season, NWS Fellows regularly visit area schools to perform chamber and solo works and share their knowledge and enthusiasm for music with students. The New World Symphony "Explorations in Music" Program stimulates students' creativity and understanding of music through the experience of chamber music. In these interactive musical presentations, students acquire focused listening skills, musical literacy - both symbolic and verbal, knowledge of cultural history, and a personal relationship to the art of music. Presentations are approximately 40 minutes long.

In-School Coachings
(Grades 6-12, free of charge)
From beginning to advanced levels, the New World Symphony Fellows are available to coach sectionals and conduct the band or orchestra in your school. Please specify instrument preference and the ensemble size.
