Frequently Asked Questions
- Who is Frank Gehry?Born in Canada in 1929, Frank Gehry is a world-renowned architect based in Los Angeles. Gehry’s revolutionary design for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, transformed the city, attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. Among his most celebrated U.S. structures are Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. and the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago’s Millenium Park. He has won several international awards and is the subject of the 2006 documentary by Sydney Pollack, “Sketches of Frank Gehry.” For more information, visit www.foga.com.
- Why does New World Symphony need a new hall?NWS is not building a new hall, but rather a laboratory for classical music that will allow our orchestral academy to reach its full potential. The Lincoln Theatre served NWS well during the academy’s formative years, but the building now presents too many costly challenges—in terms of space, acoustics, technological limitations and overall comfort—to make it a viable home for NWS in the future.
- Will NWS change the format of its performances when the new campus opens? The new facility will broaden our programming options, allowing for new formats like multimedia presentations, but NWS will continue to present traditional performances as well.
- How long will construction take?Construction for the City Center Redevelopment Project will be handled in two phases:
Phase 1, including the parking garage, retail shops and New World Symphony’s new campus, is estimated to take 29 months from groundbreaking. It is currently scheduled for completion in 2010.
Phase 2, the east surface lot, will begin once designs have been completed, with a completion date yet to be announced. Most of the east lot will remain available for parking until the new garage is open.
Construction estimates are based on the amount of time necessary to complete construction and the tasks necessary to open the buildings. However, estimated timelines may be impacted by unforeseen circumstances, such as hurricanes and inclement weather that may inhibit construction, the condition of existing underground structures and other variables.
- Will the new parking garage be just for New World Symphony events? No, the new garage will be owned and operated by the City of Miami Beach and open to the public.
- Where should I park to access Lincoln Road, the Convention Center, The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater and area shops and restaurants?
- Is it because of this project that municipal parking rates recently increased? No. Parking rates have increased city-wide, at all city-operated facilities, not just near the construction site.
- Will other groups be able to rent the new campus as a performance space?Yes. NWS will own the campus and be the primary occupant of the facilities, but outside of academy activities, several parts of the campus will be available for rent. Please direct rental inquiries to Sabrina Anico, Facilities Manager, at 305-673-3330 or sabrina.anico@nws.edu.
- Who should I contact about a specific problem caused by construction? You may contact project manager Jamie Knise of Facchina McGaughan, the construction company for the project, at 305-358-5699. He may also be accessible at the worksite. If you would like to e-mail him, he may be reached at james.knise@facchina-mcgaughan.com.
