This three-day festival honoring John Cage promises to be the world’s most programmatically ambitious and theatrical celebration of the composer’s legacy to occur during the centennial season of his birth. NWS Fellows will collaborate with some of today’s most renowned artists, exploring 26 of Cage’s rarely-performed works for large orchestra and ensembles of varying sizes.
Programmed and curated by the New World Symphony’s artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas, Making the Right Choices: A John Cage Centennial Celebration will offer a grand, theatrically immersive expression of Cage’s works, utilizing the full advantage of the spectacular staging, lighting and projection possibilities in the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center like never before.
Throughout the concerts and festival activities, audiences will enjoy videos, still images, projections of live and replayed performances, recordings of Cage reciting his own writings, exhibits, panel discussions and more, each serving to connect audiences to the performers and Cage’s vision in unique ways.
