BrazilFoundation honors Howard Herring, NWS at annual gala

The BrazilFoundation celebrates its sixth annual gala event in Miami Beach at the New World Center this Saturday, January 14, honoring individuals who support social projects throughout Brazil.

President and CEO, Howard Herring, will be recognized on behalf of the New World Symphony for its international community-building project to incorporate young musicians from Brazil into its seasonal Side-By-Side Concert.

This concert welcomes advanced young instrumentalists grades 7-12 to perform alongside New World Symphony Fellows through auditions, a week of rehearsals and a final performance at New World Center, conducted by NWS Co-Founder and Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas.

The New World Symphony Community Engagement team will work alongside New World Symphony Alumni Matthew Thorpe (violin) and Darrin Milling (bass trombone) of the Orquestra Sinfónica do Estado de São Paulo to identify three young Brazilian musicians to participate in the Side-By-Side Concert on Friday, April 22, 2017.

The New World Symphony will be honored among other award recipients including, Simone Leitão, a world-renowned pianist and Founder of Academia Jovem Concertante, Brazil’s National Youth Orchestra and SOS Dental, an organization providing free emergency dental services to disadvantaged communities in Rio de Janiero.
