Cross-Cultural Music Exchange Takes Fellows to Medellín

Five NWS Fellows returned this week from Medellin, Colombia, one of seven annual meetings between NWS Fellows and the students of Academia Filarmónica de Medellín (AFMED).

During the trip the Fellows, Kristin Baird (violin), Dima Dimitrova (violin), Carline Gilbert (viola), Hilary Glen (cello), and Alex Wadner (timpani), performed with the Principal strings from AFMED in Bogotá for a convention of executives of the HILTI Foundation, which has supported AFMED since 2012, promoting and encouraging talented musicians on their way to a professional music career.

Following the chamber music concert, the Fellows and AFMED students had the opportunity to explore the nation’s capital, trying native foods and touring local shops.

Once back in Medellín, the Fellows continued coaching the students during percussion and chamber music lessons.

The exchange program continues next month when another group of Fellows return to Medellín on February 14th.
