MTT to join American Academy of Arts and Letters

The American Academy of Arts and Letters will induct NWS Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas as an American Honorary Member in May 2018. Other Honorary Members include Thomas Adès, Bob Dylan, Norman Foster, Sofia Gubaidulina, David Hockney, Bill T. Jones, Anish Kapoor, Yo-Yo Ma, Leontyne Price, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Paul B. Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Alice Waters and Robert Wilson.

The Academy–founded in 1898 as a society of the country’s leading architects, artists, composers, and writers–seeks to foster and sustain an interest in literature, music, and the fine arts by administering over 70 awards and prizes, exhibiting art and manuscripts, funding performances of new works of musical theater, and purchasing artwork for donation to museums across the country. Honorary Membership was established in 1983 to include Americans of great distinction in the arts whose work falls outside the traditional departments of Art, Literature, and Music.

In addition to MTT, this year’s newly-elected members include:

               Art – Nicole Eisenman, Jenny Holzer, Sarah Sze
               Literature – Ron Chernow, Jeffrey Eugenides, Maxine Hong Kingston, Terrence McNally,
                                             Lynn Nottage, Jayne Anne Phillips, George Saunders
               Music – Ben Johnston, George Lewis
               Foreign Honorary Members – El Anatsui (Ghana), Ian Buruma (Netherlands), Doris Salcedo (Colombia)

They will join the Academy’s 250-person organization when inducted by president Billie Tsien. An exhibition of art, architecture, books and manuscripts by new members and recipients of awards will be on display in the Academy’s galleries from May 24 to June 17.
