NWS Will Make Its Debut Appearance in Puerto Rico

The New World Symphony will make its debut appearance in Puerto Rico at the prestigious Festival Casals, Sunday, March 6 at 7:00 PM at the University of Puerto Rico Theatre, presented by Corporación de las Artes Musicales. The Fellows will be led by conductor Pablo Heras Casado, and will be joined by pianist Emanuel Ax in a program to include Bartók’s Dance Suite; Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor;” and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 in D minor.

The following morning, New World Symphony Fellows will mentor student musicians of the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico in a side-by-side rehearsal, led by Pablo Heras Casado. Since the opening of the technologically advanced New World Center in 2011, NWS Fellows have been sharing their knowledge with younger musicians in-person and over the internet, through programs such as its Medellín Music Exchange, its yearlong MusicLab program, the annual Town Hall Master Class and Side-by-Side Concerts

Founded in 1934 by Don Pablo Casals with the vision of assembling annually in Puerto Rico musicians who have achieved exceptional artistic recognition, Festival Casals has hosted such prestigious musicians as Sir John Barbirolli, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Eugene Ormandy, Krzysztof Penderecki and Mstislav Rostropvich.

Under the direction of Musical Director Maximiano Valdés, the three-week 2016 Festival Casals will also include performances by pianists Ingrid Fliter and Bradley Moore; violinist Anne Akiko Meyers; sopranos Meechot Marrero and Ruth Ziesak; mezzo-soprano Susan Graham; baritones José Antonio López and Ricardo J. Rivera; tenor José Daninel Mojica; guest conductor Jesús López Cobos; el Trío de Cámara Hutchinson, Figueroa, Santana; the Takacs Quartet; and Puerto Rico’s own Coral Lirica de Puerto Rico, Jo-Anne Herrero, chorus director; Coral Filarmónica de San Juan, Carmen Acevedo, chorus director; and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, where NWS has three alumni, conducted by principal conductor Maximiano Valdés.

The New World Symphony will perform the same program in Miami on Saturday, March 5, at the Arsht Center in Downtown Miami. On March 4 at the New World Center, NWS, Heras Casado and Ax will perform a program to include Bartók’s Dance Suite and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor.”
