Knight Foundation

Alberto Ibargüen, President and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, speaks about supporting the festival

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation was the premier sponsor of the New World Symphony’s “Making the Right Choices, A John Cage Centennial Celebration.” The festival not only celebrated the works of John Cage by presenting them over the course of a three-day festival at the New World Center in Miami Beach, but also provided the opportunity to meticulously record the works and interview the participating artists, preserving these artistic statements for the future exploration, study and enjoyment of people around the world.  Many of these works are rarely performed live, and video recordings of them are rare to nonexistent.

This large undertaking not only celebrated in keeping with our philosophy on the cultural arts and creating engaged communities, we are proud to have sponsored the New World Symphony’s John Cage festival and its documentation for future generations. We believe that the arts are a catalyst for public dialogue and that shared cultural experiences contribute to a sense of place and communal identity. Therefore we continue to seek innovative ways to reach, engage, inspire and increase audiences for the arts-not only in Knight communities, but around the world-through the use of technology and bringing artists out of performance halls and into people's everyday lives.
