Matt Udry

Matt Udry is a second-year Cello Fellow from Kenosha, Wisconsin. He has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Leonard Slatkin, Otto Tausk and Han-Na Chang, and has also appeared with Vancouver Opera and Pacific Baroque Orchestra.

Matt’s musical interests are wide-ranging. While at Yale University, he served as the music director for Low Strung, an all-cello rock ensemble. He later studied Baroque cello at the University of British Columbia as a recipient of Early Music Vancouver’s BC Scholarship. Outside of cello, he enjoys learning jazz bass and composes his own music.

Beyond performance, Matt has a keen interest in music technology and sound. He has programmed digital audio effects, designed generative music algorithms and created works in spatial audio. Most recently, he developed a suite of tools to enhance the tonal accuracy of amplified string instruments, which he used in the premiere of his rendition of Steve Reich’s Violin Phase, arranged for solo cello and live electronics. Prior to joining New World Symphony, Matt worked as an acoustic consultant at Arup, advising on the design of music studios, museums, airports and other architectural projects.

Matt holds a bachelor of arts degree in computing and the arts from Yale University and an artist diploma from the Vancouver Academy of Music. His principal teachers include Henry Shapard, Ole Akahoshi and Scott Cook.
