Shannon Ross

Shannon Ross is a second-year Cello Fellow at the New World Symphony. Highlights from her first-year fellowship include performing Terry Riley’s The Holy Liftoff with flutist Claire Chase, playing in the solo string quartet for Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, touring with Grammy-nominated ensemble Palaver Strings and creating a partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Well-Being Concert series through NWS's BLUE project program.

Previously based in Boston, Shannon's performances there included Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto in Boston Symphony Hall for its Ligeti100 Celebration, and a performance of Boulez’ Messagesquisse as the featured soloist conducted by Hugh Wolff. Shannon is an active contemporary musician and was awarded the John Cage Award for Contemporary Music by the New England Conservatory in 2024.

Shannon has attended festivals across the world such as the Aspen Music Festival with a fellowship from the Polonsky Foundation, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Banff Centre’s Evolution: Chamber, Verao Classico in Lisbon and Schiermonnikoog Music Festival as both a soloist and quartet musician. Her mentors at these festivals included Gary Hoffman, Jeroen Reuling, Frans Helmerson and Darrett Adkins, as well as the Parker, JACK and Eybler quartets.

Shannon received her master's degree from the New England Conservatory studying with Yeesun Kim. She is forever grateful to her former mentors Abraham Feder, Andrew Mark and Mickey Katz. She holds a bachelor's degree from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Josephine Knight and was awarded the Sir John Barbirolli Prize for Outstanding Musicianship.

Shannon is on faculty at the Kinhaven Music School’s Junior Session, where she coaches chamber music and teaches privately.
