Jaben Sim

Singaporean-Chinese hornist Jaben Sim is a first year Fellow at the New World Symphony. He has performed as a guest musician with numerous prestigious ensembles such as the Vienna Symphony and Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. He was also a section horn of the National Center for the Performing Arts Orchestra (NCPAO) China, a position he held for three years. Additionally, he frequently freelances with different groups in Asia such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Sun Symphony Orchestra in Hanoi.

Jaben decided to pursue music after completing a degree in aerospace engineering. Under a full scholarship, he completed his undergraduate studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and earned a master’s degree in orchestral studies at the Tianjin Juilliard School. His teachers included Han Chang Chou, Jamie Hersch, Hoang Van Hoc and Martin Van Der Meuw.

As a candidate of ERASMUS, Jaben has studied at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague in the Netherlands. He has also spent several summers participating in the Asian Youth Orchestra and attending Aspen Music Festival as a fellow.

His other collaborations have resulted in the curation of interesting projects such as Unmask 2021, the first live-streamed full-scale concert of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music during the peak of Covid-19. He was also a founding member of Tianjin Juilliard’s inaugural summer chamber music festival.

Outside of playing, Jaben enjoys being involved in other areas of music such as concert curation, music pedagogy, community engagement and conducting.
