Tamara Mumford

Mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford has earned recognition as one of today’s most versatile and dynamic American vocal artists. A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, she made her Met debut as Laura in Luisa Miller at age 25 and has since appeared in 215 performances with the company. Most notable Met appearances include L’Amour de loin, Anna Bolena, Rigoletto, Ariadne auf Naxos, Wozzeck, The Magic Flute and Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle, which have all been included in The Met: LIVE in HD cinema broadcasts around the world.

A celebrated concert singer, Mumford made her Vienna Philharmonic debut in 2026 singing Mahler’s Eighth Symphony under the baton of Andris Nelsons. Forthcoming orchestral collaborations include the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Aspen Music Festival, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, North Carolina Symphony and St. Louis Symphony. She has toured Asia with Gustavo Dudamel and the Berlin Philharmonic, toured Spain with the Münich Philharmonic and performed with Jaap van Zweden at the Hong Kong Philharmonic and The Seoul Philharmonic.

Mumford’s operatic reach extends from early music to contemporary premieres. After her successful turn as Erda in the Ring Cycle with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Dallas Symphony Orchestra, she made her Waltraute debut in Götterdämmerung with Atlanta Opera last spring, also singing 1st Norn.

Mumford has appeared on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s recording of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony (Deutsche Grammophon), which won the 2022 GRAMMY Award for Best Choral Performance. Other recordings include Wagner's Ring Cycle with the Dallas Symphony (Erda and First Norn), Handel's Messiah with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony (Avie), and John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Deutsche Grammophon). She was one of 16 singers invited to work with Naxos Records and Yale University in a collaborative project to record the complete songs of Charles Ives.

A native of Sandy, Utah, Mumford now makes her home in Connecticut with her husband Nathan and two children Brian and Claire.
