Social Narrative Guide
At the New World Symphony we understand that everyone experiences the world in different ways. The following guide is to help plan your visit so that you can fully enjoy our concerts.
If there is anything you need that has not been covered here, please ask anyone from the Front of House Team; we are here to help!
Before arrival:
Preparing for my visit
I may want to wear comfortable clothes and bring a sweater if I get cold.
Travel
I might travel by car, rideshare, public transportation or another way.
It is helpful to arrive at least 40 minutes before the concert begins.
Arrival:
Welcome to New World Center
This is where your concert will take place.
Luc and Gianna
This is Luc and Gianna; they are here for you if you need anything
1st Floor Entrance
This entrance is located on the East side of the building, right in front of the park, Luc is usually in the lobby
2nd Floor Entrance
This entrance has a direct link, via a bridge, to the third level of the Pennsylvania garage, and Gianna is usually in the lobby

I will need a ticket to enter
A NWS Volunteer will be scanning them at the door.
Types of tickets
My ticket may be on my phone, printed on paper or waiting for me at Will Call. Staff and volunteers can help if I have questions.
Atrium:
When I enter the building
When I enter the building, I will be in a large open lobby called the Atrium. There may be many people talking and moving around before the concert. It can be loud, up to around 80 decibels when busy.
Floor Managers, volunteers and staff
Floor Managers, volunteers and staff are here to welcome me. If I need help at any time, I can ask them.
Before the concert and during intermission
Before the concert and during intermission, I may purchase snacks or drinks.
Tip: If you do not want to stand in line at the bar at intermission, you can order before the concert, and they will have it ready for you to pick up!
Restrooms are located in the Atrium
There is also an individual, spacious all-gender restroom available towards the back of the Atrium on level 1 and level 2.
Performance Hall:
Before the concert begins
Before the concert begins, I may hear a bell. The bell lets everyone know it is time to enter the Performance Hall.
As I enter
As I enter, I may receive a concert program. The program tells me about the musicians (called Fellows), the conductor, guest artists and the music I will hear.
Find your seat
An usher can help me find my seat. My seat may be upstairs, downstairs, close to the stage or behind the orchestra. Every seat is a little different.
Sight view
You may be sitting upstairs or downstairs, in front of or behind the orchestra.
During the Concert:
When the concert is about to begin
When the concert is about to begin, the lights in the audience become dim. The stage becomes brighter so everyone can see the musicians.
The musicians will walk onto the stage
The audience usually applauds to welcome them. The conductor may speak before the music begins.
During the concert
Audience members sit quietly while listening to the music.
If sounds feel too loud
If sounds feel too loud, I may borrow noise-canceling headphones. If I need a quieter space, I can visit the Sensory-Friendly Room that is available at select concerts. If no Sensory-Friendly Room is available, ask a NWS staff member, and we will find a quiet space for you.
Intermission
Many concerts have a 20-minute intermission. During this break, I can use the restroom, stretch my legs, get a snack or drink, or relax before the second half begins. When the bell rings again, it is time to return to my seat.
The musicians return to the stage
The musicians return to the stage, and the concert continues.
When the music ends
When the music ends, the audience applauds. The musicians bow to thank the audience. Sometimes the audience stands to applaud.
The encore
Sometimes the musicians perform one extra piece called an encore.
The end
Then the concert is complete.
When the concert is over
When the concert is over, the lights become brighter. People begin leaving the Performance Hall. I can take my time as I exit.
After the Concert
After the concert
Sometimes the Fellows are in the Atrium after the concert. If I would like, I can say hello or ask them questions about the performance.
Time to leave
Now it is time to leave the New World Center. I hope I enjoyed my visit, and I am always welcome to come back for another concert.
